In the world of vintage Omega, there are certain calibers that are the stuff of legend. At the very top of that list, without question, is the venerable 30T2. This family of movements is, arguably, the most important and celebrated manual-winding caliber Omega ever produced. It was a movement so accurate and robust that it dominated the Geneva and Kew-Teddington observatory trials for years, cementing Omega’s reputation as a world-class chronometer manufacturer. To find a 30T2 in any watch is a treat; to find one in a “jumbo” case like this is something truly special.
The 30mm movement, introduced in 1939, was a masterpiece of simplistic, brilliant design. Its large balance wheel and efficient layout made it incredibly reliable and capable of being regulated to astounding levels of precision. It was the movement that powered many of Omega’s military watches during WWII and became the foundation for the later chronometer-grade 30T2RG. It is, in every sense of the word, an icon. In the 1940s, while most men’s watches hovered around 33-35mm, Omega produced a few oversized or “jumbo” models, and the Reference 2319 is one of the most sought-after. Its larger case was a bold statement of style and confidence in the post-war era.
This particular example, a Ref. 2319/2 dating to circa 1944 based on its 10-million serial number, is one of the most soulful and visually arresting watches we’ve ever had the pleasure of offering. The oversized 38mm stainless steel case is in fantastic, sharp condition, but it’s the dial that will absolutely take your breath away. The original two-tone silvered dial has aged into a spectacular, mottled tapestry of cream, gold, and grey. This is what collectors dream of: a “tropical” or “galaxy” patina that is completely unique and utterly beautiful. It’s an organic piece of art, created by nearly 80 years of life and exposure to the elements. The printed Roman numerals and dot markers are still legible beneath this incredible patina, and the original blued-steel leaf handset remains in place, adding to its authentic vintage character.
