Overview

Venice supplied an unexpected detail to the Omega Seamaster: its seahorse. During a visit in the 1950s, engraver Jean-Pierre Borle noticed the sculpted creatures decorating the city’s gondolas and found the inspiration for Omega’s caseback emblem. The creature on this Omega Seamaster 14744-1 is a hippocampus, with the head of a horse, the tail of a fish and a bridle that gives away the connection.

We enjoy that small borrowing between crafts. The Seamaster name explains the aquatic subject, but it does not explain why the animal wears reins. That detail came from the ornamental fittings of a Venetian boat. Here, the emblem sits in the center of the stainless steel caseback, a miniature piece of mythology usually hidden against the wrist.

This example pairs a 35mm case in 14k gold and stainless steel with an Omega-signed, two-tone beads-of-rice bracelet. The bracelet combines stainless steel with 14k gold fill and closes with a folding clasp. We would keep that pairing together. Gold does not have to make a watch feel formal, and the small, rounded links give this one a pleasantly relaxed character. The white dial carries fine speckling and patina on its dauphine hands, details that sit comfortably with the warmth of the gold.

Inside is the automatic caliber 503, with central seconds and a date display at three. Its full-rotation rotor winds the mainspring through the winding train as the watch moves. The case measures 43mm from lug to lug, keeping the proportions compact without losing the presence of the broad bezel and bracelet. A useful calendar automatic on the front, a little Venetian history on the back.
