Overview

There are four hands at the center of this Omega Seamaster 176.007, with elapsed minutes joining the hours, minutes and chronograph seconds. Rather than tuck that counter into a small register, Omega gave it a hand that travels around the main dial. We find that decision more interesting than the nickname: a chronograph that lets a timed interval occupy the same generous space as the time of day.

The movement behind it is caliber 1040, introduced in 1971 with the Speedmaster Mark III as Omega’s first self-winding chronograph caliber. The Seamaster 176.007 belongs to that same early automatic chronograph generation. This was more than a familiar display with a rotor added behind it. Central chronograph seconds and minutes, a twelve-hour counter, a date and a day/night indication gave the 1040 a layout of its own. Its cam-operated mechanism serves a dial that is busy without following the usual three-register arrangement.

There is a second, rather less orderly history attached to the name. Collector Chuck Maddox used Jedi for the manual-wind Seamaster reference 145.024; the nickname subsequently spread through the market to other Seamasters, including the 176.007. It is later collector usage here, not Omega’s period model name. The nickname links the watch to a later collecting culture, while the dial leads back to the early 1970s. We find the mechanical story more compelling: four central hands, each with a distinct job.

This example gives that instrument-like layout an unexpectedly warm setting. The mocha sunburst dial sits within a gold-plated cushion case, with gold-tone hands and applied rectangular hour markers. Against those colors, the blue section of the day/night display at nine is a small, deliberate interruption. The cross-tailed chronograph-minute hand is the detail we keep returning to: unusual at rest, immediately intelligible once its role is understood. The twelve-hour counter at six and date at three complete an asymmetric arrangement that still feels composed.

The case measures 38mm across and 42mm from lug to lug, with a stainless steel back carrying the Seamaster seahorse. Inside the back, the inscription “20 MICRONS” records the gold plating. Two round pushers flank an Omega-signed crown, while the tachymeter scale sits around the dial rather than on an external bezel. Fine surface marks accompany the broad case contours. The brown shark skin strap adds a pronounced grain and pale stitching, a textured counterpoint to the dial’s radiating finish.

What draws us to this Omega Seamaster 176.007 is the way its mechanical idea remains visible from across a table. The nickname may be the introduction, but the central minute counter is the reason to spend another moment with it.
