Overview

Founded in Le Locle in 1882 by Ariste Calame, Zodiac spent the better part of the twentieth century building a reputation for technically serious, design-forward watchmaking. While the brand’s tool watch heritage gets most of the modern spotlight, arguably the most rewarding corner of vintage Zodiac territory is the dress catalog of the 1960s, where the maison’s design team really embraced the geometry, minimalism, and quiet confidence of the era. This square-cased reference is a fantastic example of that sensibility, the kind of piece that reads as completely modern even sixty years on.

Powering this watch is the Zodiac caliber 52, a manual-wind seventeen-jewel movement renowned for its slim profile and clean architecture. Visible through our movement shot, the bridge carries the crisp “ZODIAC LTD,” “SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS,” “SWISS,” and “UNADJUSTED” engravings, along with the “52” caliber stamp. Movements like this were the workhorses behind countless mid-century Zodiac dress watches, and the cal. 52 in particular was prized by the brand for its ability to fit cleanly into the era’s increasingly slim and angular case designs without sacrificing reliability. The architecture is honest, well-finished, and exactly what you want to find behind a watch of this character.

The case combines a gold-plated bezel and lugs with a stainless steel back, as confirmed by the inner caseback stamping which clearly reads “Zodiac, Ltd. Le Locle, Swiss” and “FOND ACIER INOXYDABLE,” along with the reference number 523 007. The outer caseback carries the original serial number 1674338, sharply struck into the brushed steel surface. What we love most about this case is the architecture, with a stepped, multi-level construction that creates strong shadow lines along the sides and gives the watch real visual depth despite its thin profile. The edges and bevels remain wonderfully crisp throughout, with no evidence of polishing, a strong indicator of an honest, unmolested case. The original signed crown is still in place at three o’clock, complete with the smaller fluted profile correct for this reference.

The dial is the part that really sells this piece for us. The base is a soft silvered tone with a vertical brushed linen finish that catches the light differently as the watch moves, and laid over that is a subtle crosshair pattern dividing the dial into quadrants in classic mid-century fashion. At twelve sits a beautifully stylized applied “12” Arabic numeral, with applied gold baton markers at 3, 6, and 9, and small black-printed angular markers at the four corner positions of the square format. The “Zodiac” signature in serif italic and the “Swiss Made” designation at the bottom edge are both clearly legible. Slim gold dauphine hands with central crease finish off the layout. There is some honest spotting visible across the dial surface, the kind of fine, scattered character that develops only over decades, and to us this reads as the genuine fingerprint of a survivor rather than any kind of flaw.

We have paired this Zodiac with one of our taupe OTTUHR leather straps, finished in cream contrast stitching, which gives the watch a slightly muted, contemporary frame that lets the warmth of the gold case and silvered dial do the talking. In our opinion, this is precisely how a square dress watch from this era should be worn, equal parts mid-century geometry and effortless modern wearability. For the collector seeking a genuinely interesting, design-forward vintage Zodiac that isn’t another round case, this 523-007 is a wildly cool piece.
