Zodiac is a brand that serious collectors have been quietly stockpiling for years, and for good reason. Founded in Le Locle in 1882 by Ariste Calame, the brand has one of the longest unbroken histories in Swiss watchmaking, predating many of the names that command far higher prices on the secondary market today. While Zodiac is perhaps best known among enthusiasts for the Sea Wolf, one of the earliest purpose-built dive watches in history, the brand’s dress watch output from the mid-century period deserves equal attention. The “Hermetic” line, whose name references the airtight, sealed case construction that was a genuine selling point in an era when water damage was a common and costly occurrence, represents Zodiac at its most refined: clean, elegant, and executed with a level of finishing that punches well above its weight class.
The 1960s were a particularly fertile period for Zodiac. The brand was producing everything from dive watches to chronographs to dress pieces, all powered by robust Swiss movements and housed in cases that reflected genuine design ambition. The Hermetic Automatic sits squarely in the dress watch tradition, and it does so with a purity of design that feels almost Bauhaus in its restraint. There is nothing extraneous here. Every element serves a purpose, and the result is a watch that feels effortlessly sophisticated without trying too hard.
This particular example is, to put it plainly, a near time capsule. The dial is stunning. The radial sunburst finish is remarkably well-preserved, throwing light across its surface with a silvery brilliance that photographs can only hint at. In person, this dial shifts from bright white to warm silver to a cool steel grey depending on the angle, and the effect is mesmerizing. The applied gold baton markers sit cleanly against this luminous backdrop, their rectangular forms adding just enough visual weight to anchor the design without competing with the sunburst finish. The Zodiac crosshair logo at twelve o’clock is crisp and sharp, and the “Hermetic” script below it is rendered in a charming, slightly ornate typeface that gives the dial its personality. The “Automatic” script at six provides balance, and the “T SWISS MADE T” designation at the very bottom confirms the tritium luminous material in the hands. Speaking of which, the gold dauphine hands are in excellent condition, retaining their polished finish with minimal signs of wear.
The 10K gold-filled case is in fantastic shape. The slim profile is immediately striking, revealing the kind of elegant proportions that define the best 1960s dress watches. The wire lugs extend gracefully from the case, giving the watch an airy, refined presence on the wrist. The signed Zodiac crosshair crown is original and crisp, and the caseback, stamped with “Zodiac,” “WATERPROOF,” “18K GOLD FILLED,” and “ANTIMAGNETIC,” retains its concentric circular brushing beautifully. The case sides show only the faintest hairline scratches from occasional wear, suggesting this watch spent much of its life in a drawer or worn only for special occasions.
This is, in our opinion, one of the most elegant vintage dress watches you can buy at this price level. At roughly 34mm with that slim case profile and those wire lugs, it wears with a quiet refinement that feels completely timeless. It’s the kind of watch that disappears under a shirt cuff until you need it, and when you glance down, that sunburst dial rewards you with a flash of silver and gold that is genuinely beautiful. For the collector who appreciates undervalued Swiss brands with real heritage, or for anyone searching for a versatile vintage dress watch that can be worn daily without a second thought, this Zodiac Hermetic is a fantastic find.
