Overview

Nobody in 1968 was asking for a 38 millimeter watch. The standard for a full-sized men’s Omega hovered around 34, and plenty of respectable wrists wore less. So when Omega stretched its new C-case Seamaster to 38 millimeters across and 42 lug to lug, it was not meeting the market, it was getting ahead of it by about fifty years. Collectors settled the naming question quickly and permanently: the Jumbo.

The C-case was Omega’s design language for the back half of the sixties, one soft continuous curve doing the work lugs used to do, and the Omega Seamaster 168.035 sits at the top of that family. Omega built the big C-case Seamaster in four references and split them cleanly: the 166.064 and 166.065 carried the standard automatic calibers, while the chronometer pair got something better. The 168.035 is the date version of that pair, powered by exactly one movement, the caliber 564, with 24 jewels and adjustment in five positions, the certified grade of the 560-series family. Chronometer status in 1968 was not a marketing tier, it was an examination: each movement individually regulated, then timed and passed before the claim could be printed. The dial states the result across three lines: AUTOMATIC CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED.

This example wears the full configuration. The inner caseback carries the 168.035 reference, the bridge is stamped 564 over a serial that places production at the very end of the 1960s, and the dial is the granular frosted silver that gives the reference its sandblasted name, a surface that scatters light rather than reflecting it. It is a finish Omega used sparingly, and it is the reason photographs of this watch never quite agree on what shade of silver it is.

The stainless cushion case remains broad-shouldered and brushed, black inlaid square markers and black baton hands float on the silver ground, the framed date sits at three, and the lume plots have aged to a warm honey yellow. The 22 millimeter lug width plants the case on the wrist with a stance most makers would not attempt for decades, and it clears a full 8 inch wrist with room to spare. The caseback wears its scratches around the hippocampus medallion, honest evidence of five decades in rotation, and the crown is Omega-signed.
