Overview

Eight stars and a small observatory occupy the back of this Omega Constellation 167.005. They refer to Omega’s record in chronometer competitions, a surprisingly specific piece of history to tuck against the wrist. We like the contrast with the single applied star on the dial: one identifies the collection at a glance, while the scene on the reverse explains the precision tradition behind the name.

That collection began in 1952, following the Centenary that Omega had made for its hundredth anniversary in 1948. The Centenary was an automatic chronometer produced in limited numbers; its reception encouraged Omega to make the idea a continuing collection. The Constellation followed with chronometer performance at the center of its identity. It could be lavishly dressed, but precious metal was not the qualification for membership. Contemporary Deluxe and Grand Luxe versions shared their movement standards with less elaborate Constellations.

That distinction matters with this reference. The rose gold cap sits over stainless steel, while the automatic caliber 551 carries the Constellation’s chronometer identity. This example’s dial states it plainly: “CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED”. The observatory on the reverse is a reminder of the company’s competition record, carried by a production watch rather than a competition instrument. We find the presentation unusually complete. The engineering has its place inside, the certification its place on the dial, and the history its place on the back. The cap adds warmth without being the entire point of the watch.

The 1960s design gives that idea a different kind of precision. Twelve facets form the edge of the silver pie-pan dial, crossed by fine vertical and horizontal lines. With no date aperture, the geometry continues uninterrupted around the applied rose-tone markers. Dauphine hands echo the pointed forms, while the dogleg lugs make the round case feel angular without becoming bulky. We are particularly drawn to the way the crosshairs hold the center still as the outer facets change with the light.

Measuring 34mm across and 43mm from lug to lug, the case has a 14k rose gold cap over stainless steel, a smooth bezel and an Omega-signed faceted crown. The screw-back carries the observatory medallion, and the no-date automatic caliber 551 supplies central seconds. Small scattered age spots lend texture to the silver dial, accompanied by fine exterior wear. The chocolate brown ostrich strap picks up the warmth of the case without competing with the dial’s linework.

There is plenty to take in before turning this Omega Constellation 167.005 over. Still, we would start with those eight stars. They give the rose gold, the facets and the small star beneath the signature a shared point of reference.
