Overview

Omega never gave this Seamaster a bezel to lose. The upper case of the Omega Seamaster 166.067 is a single piece of steel, flanks and heavy lugs running together in one rounded mass, and the front is marked only by a level ring that looks pressed into the metal rather than fitted. Omega polished that ring and brushed the sides, so the case shows two finishes with no join between them. Collectors gave the reference a plain nickname for it: the Seamaster born without a bezel.

The reference arrived in 1969 and was advertised in Omega’s International Collection until 1973, a short run on the hinge between two decades. Round cases with separate lugs had carried the Seamaster line through the 1960s; this tonneau, broad at the shoulders and symmetrical with no crown guards, leans into the shapes of the 1970s. A no-date twin, the 165.067 with caliber 552, shared the case. This example’s movement serial, 30334401, puts it early in the window, around 1969 or 1970.

For all its dress-watch smoothness, the 166.067 was sold as an everyday water-resistant Seamaster, not a diver’s instrument. Its screw-down back carries the Seamaster medallion at the center.

Behind that back sits caliber 565, which carries 24 jewels and a date. Its balance swings at 19,800 vibrations hourly, and the signed rotor keeps the mainspring topped up as the wrist moves. The 500 series has a long reputation among watchmakers as sturdy and straightforward to service, and the 565 belongs to its final generation.

The dial is silver with a fine vertical grain and a small scattering of flecks. Short applied markers each carry a dark horizontal band, and the stick hands repeat the idea with dark slots running down their centers, their tips now discolored. The date shows through a framed window at 3.

At 35.5mm wide and 44mm from lug to lug, the steel case is generous for its day, and the thick lugs make it wear larger than those numbers suggest. The bracelet is steel. Fine scratches run along the shoulders and flanks and across the back. The profile is where we would start, with the flat polished ring sitting on all that rounded steel like a lid.
