America used to tax a watch by counting the jewels inside it. Duty on an imported movement was scaled to jewel count, and the step up past 17 jewels was steep enough to reprice a whole collection by itself. Omega’s answer for the American market was to build one that came in under the line. This Omega Seamaster 166.002 is one of them.
The caliber 560 is the 550 family’s automatic architecture, the same base that produced the 24-jewel 562 running in most of these, specified down to 17 jewels. Nothing about that made it a better movement. It made it a cheaper one to land. They came in through the Norman Morris Corporation, Omega’s American agent from 1937 to 1970, reached buyers here between roughly 1963 and 1967, and carry serial numbers through the 16 to 23 million range. Total production was about 3,000 movements, spread across nine models. That figure comes from the Omega Vintage Database by way of the collector Desmond Guilfoyle, who had it confirmed by Omega’s museum staff.
To an American buyer in 1965 none of this was visible. The watch on the counter said Omega, wound itself, kept the date, and cost what Omega needed it to cost. The compromise was seven jewels deep inside a movement nobody was going to open.
This is one of those, and it is the version that never got its name. The bridge is stamped 560 beneath the Omega symbol, serial 20983805, which dates it to about 1963. The dial is signed Omega and Automatic and nothing else: no Seamaster script, no model line. What names it is the reference stamped inside the caseback, 166.002, alongside ACIER INOXYDABLE and FAB. SUISSE. The outside of that caseback is plain steel, no seahorse, no engraving. Omega Forums documents that pairing on the Omega Seamaster 166.002, blank dial with blank back, sold as stock a company or a family could put a name and a date on. This one never got one.
The case is stainless steel, 34.5mm across and 40mm lug to lug, slim, with a smooth fixed bezel, straight faceted lugs, a fluted crown at 3 and an acrylic crystal. The white dial carries applied faceted baton markers with small lume plots aged to cream, a doubled marker at 12, a framed date window at 3 and dauphine hands. It reads SWISS at 6. Wear worth naming: scratches on the bezel and crystal, and a central seconds hand oxidized to rust brown. It runs on brown Babele leather, 18mm, on an OTTUHR buckle. No box or papers.
Serviced in-house and covered by our two-year mechanical warranty. The strap is our own pairing rather than anything original to the watch, so swap it freely. Seven jewels short of its sibling, by order of a customs schedule rather than a watchmaker. It still keeps the date.
