Overview

Ladymatic was a name with a mechanical meaning when Omega introduced the family in 1955: a self-winding watch created for women. That history gives this vintage Omega Ladymatic more context than its small size suggests. We are drawn to the contrast between the line’s miniature engineering and this example’s lemon dial. The proportions are restrained; the color is not content to disappear. It is a small watch with two quite different reasons to hold our attention.

Omega’s account of the early collection describes compact cases and simple dot or index markers, built around a miniature caliber developed for women’s watches. The factory technical sheet for that movement specifies a diameter of just 16mm. That number gives the history a useful physical scale: the mechanical interest was contained within the watch, rather than expressed through an elaborate display. We find that restraint worth remembering when a small dial and a few slim markers can make an entire design seem deceptively uncomplicated.

In 2010, Omega revived the Ladymatic name for a new collection. Its announcement returned explicitly to the meaning of the 1955 name, although the new watches had different proportions and movements. We mention that return because it separates two chapters often gathered under the same model name. This is the compact vintage chapter, not the later revival. Its appeal is rooted in that smaller scale and in the directness of a dial whose job is simply to carry three hands and the hour markers.

On this example, the lemon color changes the mood of that straightforward layout. Applied batons and pointed hands provide structure, while the aged, mottled texture gives the face a less uniform presence. We find the contrast between those precise markers and the irregular texture particularly appealing. Against the steel surround and black strap, the dial becomes the watch’s point of emphasis. The slender central seconds hand is another detail worth pausing over at this scale.

The round stainless steel case is 20mm wide and 25mm from lug to lug, with a smooth bezel, faceted lugs and a pronounced domed crystal. An Omega-signed crown sits at the side, and the black leather strap fits the 10mm lug spacing. Inside the caseback, the reference reads 11000 SC-61; the outer back bears a hippocampus emblem. Gentle exterior wear complements the age-textured face. There is no date aperture to interrupt the dial, leaving the narrow markers and central handset room to work.

What stays with us about this vintage Omega Ladymatic is the imbalance between its modest footprint and its very definite color. The name carries the family’s mechanical history; this lemon dial gives the individual watch its own voice.
