Overview

The Omega Seamaster is, without question, one of the most important and enduring names in all of horology. Born in 1948 to commemorate Omega’s wartime achievements in producing waterproof wristwatches for the British military, the Seamaster quickly transcended its utilitarian origins to become the quintessential all-purpose wristwatch, equally at home in the boardroom, on the sailing deck, or at a black-tie dinner. By the mid-1950s, it had become the watch that defined Omega’s identity, and arguably the most versatile timepiece money could buy.

The Reference 2846 represents a fascinating and pivotal chapter in that Seamaster story. Produced during what many collectors consider Omega’s golden decade, it served as the vessel for the brand’s groundbreaking Caliber 500 and 501 series, the first full-rotor automatic movements to replace the earlier bumper automatics. This was a seismic shift in Omega’s mechanical architecture, and the 2846 was right at the center of it. The case design itself is quintessential 1950s: broad, confident lugs that give the 34mm case a commanding wrist presence far beyond its modest diameter, paired with a clean, uncluttered bezel that lets the dial do all the talking.

This particular example, the 9SC variant in 14K gold-capped steel, is a genuinely impressive survivor. The silver satin dial is, to put it simply, mint. The printing is crisp and fully intact, from the applied Omega horseshoe logo and “AUTOMATIC” designation through to the elegant cursive “Seamaster” script at six o’clock and the “SWISS MADE” marking below. What really steals the show, though, are the applied hour markers. These beautifully faceted dagger indices, rendered in gold to match the case, catch the light with a geometric brilliance that is pure mid-century sophistication. There is nothing quite like the way they play with light on the wrist, each one a tiny, hand-finished sculpture. The original dauphine handset completes the picture with its dark, oxidized patina that contrasts gorgeously against the bright dial.

Underneath, the Omega Caliber 501 hums along in its signature copper-plated livery. A 20-jewel automatic with a full rotor winding system, shock protection, and a swan neck regulator, it is one of the most robust and easily serviceable movements Omega ever produced. These movements are legendary among watchmakers for their reliability and longevity, and finding one still happily ticking after nearly seven decades is a testament to the engineering that went into them.

The 14K gold-capped case presents with honest, gentle wear consistent with a life well-lived. The broad lugs retain their strong proportions and pleasing symmetry, and the original Omega signed crown remains in place, a detail that collectors rightly obsess over. The stainless steel caseback bears the iconic Seamaster Hippocampus medallion and “WATERPROOF” designation, with all original factory markings crisp inside. There are light surface marks on the case flanks and caseback, but nothing that detracts from the overall impression of a well-preserved, largely untouched example.

To us, this is vintage Omega at its most compelling. The 2846 offers genuine mechanical substance, real historical significance, and a design language that remains as elegant today as it was nearly seventy years ago. Paired here with an olive leather strap that perfectly complements the warm gold tones, it is a watch that works effortlessly with everything from a linen shirt to a tailored suit. For the collector seeking an honest, original mid-century Seamaster with extraordinary dial condition, this one is very hard to beat.
