Overview

The dial is the story. What left the Omega factory in the late 1950s as a glossy lacquered black field has developed across decades of light and oxygen into a fine speckled patina that scatters across the surface like a slow-exposure photograph of a night sky. To us, this is what a factory Omega Seamaster black dial looks like when sixty-plus years of chemistry are allowed to do their own work, and in our opinion the dial is the entire reason this reference 2848 is worth knowing about. Original black dial Seamasters from the 1950s are genuinely uncommon. The catalogue ran heavily toward silver and champagne across this generation, and a factory-original black canvas was a quieter, less-ordered choice that fewer buyers selected at the counter. That ratio has not changed in sixty years, and an honest black dial 2848 in this kind of preservation reads as a meaningfully harder thing to find than the silver-dial equivalent.

The Omega Seamaster line had been the brand’s everyday water-resistant platform since 1948, when the centenary-year reference 2518 reworked the waterproof case construction that Omega had supplied to the British Ministry of Defence during the Second World War into a civilian wristwatch for the modern gentleman. By the middle of the 1950s, the Seamaster catalogue had matured into a wide range of references that shared cases, dials, and movements with the chronometer-rated Constellation, and the reference 2848 sits inside that middle generation as one of the cleaner everyday automatic Seamasters Omega produced before the line moved to the 1XX-series numbering system at the close of the decade. No date, no complications, just a beautifully finished automatic movement in a stainless steel case.

The caliber 500, introduced in 1957, is the headline beneath the dial. The 500 was Omega’s first true full-rotor automatic with central seconds, replacing the long line of bumper automatics that had defined the brand since the early 1940s. Where the bumpers used a swinging mass that knocked against spring buffers in a back-and-forth motion, the 500 used the now-standard rotor that pivots a full 360 degrees on a central axle, beating at 19,800 vibrations per hour across seventeen jewels. The copper-toned bridges, the Omega-signed rotor pivoting on its central axle, and the architectural template that every Omega automatic of the 1960s would inherit, including the chronometer-rated 5XX family that powered the Constellations, all start here. Our service photographs read the OMEGA WATCH CO SWISS engraving along the rotor edge, the SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS UNADJUSTED specification, and the copper finishing across the bridges, exactly as a properly preserved caliber 500 should present. To us, the 500 is the movement that quietly bridged Omega’s prewar identity and its postwar chronometer ambition, and finding one in this kind of clean, well-maintained state is exactly the running condition a vintage Seamaster collector wants underneath.

The stainless steel case measures 34mm across, 42mm lug-to-lug, and 18mm between the lugs, with the broad sloped lugs that define the early Seamaster aesthetic retaining their intended thickness and proportion. This is the lug shape collectors refer to when they talk about chubby-lug Seamasters, and it is what gives the 34mm 2848 a wrist presence well beyond its modest diameter. Honest hairlines record decades of wear across the lugs and case sides. The outer caseback carries the SEAMASTER engraving along the upper arc and the WATERPROOF specification along the lower edge, with a brushed central disc surrounded by a polished outer ring, the brushed field showing the heavy patina of a watch that has been worn rather than locked away. Open the back and the inner caseback carries the multilingual gasket instructions in German, French, English, and Spanish, the ACIER INOXYDABLE stainless steel marking, and the Omega triangle hallmark with OMEGA inside, exactly the period-correct stamping set we want to see on a 2848.

Back to the dial, which is where this Omega Seamaster black dial 2848 turns into a piece of accidental art. Applied silver-tone dagger indices ring the dial at every hour position except twelve, where an applied Arabic 12 numeral stands at the top giving the face a touch of personality that pure-baton configurations lack. The crosshair pattern, two thin lines that cross through the dial center and divide the surface into four quadrants, remains fully visible across the speckled black field. The printed OMEGA logo and symbol with the AUTOMATIC line beneath sit cleanly under the 12, and the cursive Seamaster script along the lower half reads exactly as Omega printed it in the late 1950s. A fine minute track rings the dial periphery. The dauphine hands have aged into a warm polished steel with traces of original luminous compound surviving in the central channels. Refinished dials kill the value of any vintage Omega, and the factory dial is the single most important originality factor on any reference this old. This dial is exactly the kind of survivor that makes the 2848 worth chasing.

The crown is the original Omega-signed component with the period-correct Omega symbol clearly stamped on the crown face, the kind of factory original that is among the first parts to be replaced during routine service across six decades and the kind of detail a serious vintage Omega collector reads first. The acrylic crystal sits clear above the dial.

We have paired the watch with one of our distressed olive leather straps and an OTTUHR signed buckle. The warm olive tone picks up the polished silver indices and dauphine hands without competing with the dark speckled field of the dial, and the slightly grained leather gives the package the everyday-wear weight a 1950s Seamaster lives in best.

Serviced in-house at OTTUHR and backed by our 2-year mechanical warranty, this is the kind of late-1950s Omega Seamaster we get genuinely excited about. Factory original black dial, original signed crown, intact crosshair, broad-lug case in honest unrestored condition, and the caliber 500 that started the modern Omega automatic story. For the collector who values originality over polish, who reads a speckled dial as character rather than damage, and who wants a piece of late-1950s Swiss watchmaking with a real story attached, this is exactly the kind of watch we love bringing in.
