Don't miss the next drop
The Seamaster line launched in 1948 as Omega celebrated its hundredth anniversary, and by the mid-1950s the collection had matured into one of the most versatile and well-respected families in Swiss watchmaking. The Ref. 2848-2849 represents that golden era perfectly, a time when Omega was firing on all cylinders, producing movements of exceptional quality and housing them in cases that balanced elegance with real-world durability. Inside beats the Caliber 500, a full-rotor automatic with 17 jewels that succeeded the earlier bumper automatics and brought smooth, reliable self-winding to Omega’s mid-range Seamaster offerings. It’s a movement that watchmakers consistently praise for its simplicity, serviceability, and longevity, and the example here displays its characteristic copper-toned finish and robust construction beautifully.
But let’s be honest about why this particular watch stopped us in our tracks: that dial. What was once a clean, light-toned surface has undergone a remarkable tropical transformation over the past seven decades, developing a warm, speckled honey-caramel patina with a mottled, almost organic texture that shifts and dances in the light. It’s the kind of aging that cannot be faked, cannot be rushed, and cannot be replicated. Every single tropical dial is unique, and this one has a depth and warmth to it that is, in our opinion, absolutely gorgeous. The applied gold dagger indices still stand proud against this richly aged surface, and the Arabic “12” at the top of the dial adds a charming asymmetry that was a hallmark of 1950s Seamaster design. The “Seamaster” script at six o’clock remains legible, as do the Omega logo and “Automatic” text, all framed by a fine hash-mark minute track. The dauphine hands carry their original radium lume, now darkened and granular with age, harmonizing perfectly with the tropical character of the dial.
The gold-capped case tells the story of a watch that was genuinely worn and appreciated. There is visible brassing along the bezel and lug edges where decades of daily wear have thinned the gold plating, and the case sides show honest surface marks consistent with a life well-lived. The signed Omega crown is original, and the profile shot reveals the svelte, slim case proportions that make these mid-century Seamasters such comfortable daily wearers. The stainless steel caseback carries the “SEAMASTER” badge and “WATERPROOF” stamp, and, wonderfully, a personal engraving: “M.P.D. AUG. 1957.” To us, these kinds of inscriptions are not flaws. They are provenance. They tell you exactly when this watch entered someone’s life, likely as a gift to mark a milestone, and they root the piece in a specific moment in history. It’s a detail that makes the watch more compelling, not less.
This is a watch for the collector who understands that perfection isn’t always the point. The tropical dial alone makes this piece a standout, a one-of-one conversation starter that offers the kind of wrist presence no modern reissue can touch. Paired with the warm lizard-grain strap, it has a cohesive, autumnal elegance that works beautifully with everything from tweed to linen. It’s a genuine 1950s Omega Seamaster with character to burn, and at this price point, it’s an incredibly compelling way to own a piece of horological history that truly no one else will have.
