Vintage Bulova Sunburst Dial Manual Wind Cal. 11BLC in Stainless Steel

$385.00

Say Bulova and most collectors think of the Accutron’s electronic hum. This is the quieter side of the brand, a hand-wound Swiss caliber under a silver sunburst dial that throws its light out from the center.

Overview

Say Bulova to most collectors and the first sound is the Accutron’s electronic hum, the tuning-fork movement the brand launched in 1960 and was never quite allowed to stop being known for. It is worth remembering that for every humming Accutron, Bulova was quietly turning out conventional mechanical watches that were every bit as carefully made, and this vintage Bulova is one of the better arguments for that quieter half of the catalog. In our opinion the silver sunburst dial is what makes it, the radial brushed finish throwing light out from the center as the wrist turns, so the whole face seems to breathe under the crystal.

Bulova built its reputation in two places at once. The name is American, founded in New York in 1875, but the movements behind watches like this one were Swiss, made and finished in the company’s own Bienne operations. The 11-series calibers were the workhorses of that Swiss line through the 1960s, the dependable hand-wound engines under Bulova’s dress range while the Accutron took the headlines.

That engine is the caliber 11BLC, a seventeen-jewel manual-wind movement measuring 11.5 lignes across and beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour, carrying a center sweep seconds hand rather than a small running seconds. It is an honest, serviceable caliber of exactly the kind that earned Bulova’s Swiss mechanicals their reputation, and ours runs as it should. The bridge is signed BULOVA WATCH CO across a warm gilt finish, the small tell that separates a cared-for movement from a parts-bin survivor.

The stainless steel case measures 33mm across and 40mm from lug to lug, with 18mm between the lugs, compact and upright in the way mid-century dress watches were cut to sit flat under a cuff. Turn it over and the screw-back reads STAINLESS STEEL CASE around the rim, with WATERPROOF, SHOCK RESISTANT and ANTI MAGNETIC stamped around it and the Bulova date code M7 below, which places this example in 1967. The polish carries the soft hairlines of a watch that was worn and not babied, and we have left every one of them as found.

The dial is the reason to look twice. Silver sunburst at the center, framed by applied faceted baton markers with darkened insets that catch the light independently of the dial behind them, double markers standing at twelve and the BULOVA signature printed cleanly below. The dauphine hands carry tritium that has aged to a warm cream, matched by small luminous dots at the chapter ring, and the lume text at the foot reads T SWISS T, the tritium notation correct for the period and the confirmation that this is a Swiss Bulova through and through. Where the dial shows its age it does so gently, and we read all of it as character earned.

It comes on a black leather strap fitted to a signed buckle, the restrained pairing a silver dial like this one asks for, letting the sunburst do the talking without anything competing for the eye.

Serviced in-house at OTTUHR and backed by our 2-year mechanical warranty, this vintage Bulova is original, honest, and mechanically sound. For the collector who would rather own the everyday Swiss Bulova that was built to be worn than the technological showpiece that took the headlines, this is the one. Compact, characterful, and quietly well made, it asks nothing to be understood. To us, the watch Bulova did not make a fuss about is the one worth wearing.
