There is an undeniable purity to Omega’s simple “Automatic” watches from the 1950s. While they may not carry the famous “Seamaster” or “Constellation” script, these are, in many ways, the most essential expressions of Omega’s golden age. They are the perfect blend of robust, in-house engineering and supremely elegant mid-century design.
The story of this watch is its movement. Ticking inside is the Omega Caliber 490, a fantastic example from the brand’s second generation of full-rotor automatic movements. Following the success of the 47x series, the 490 was a high-grade, 17-jewel workhorse, beautifully finished in Omega’s signature copper-gilt, and built to be both reliable and precise. It was movements like this that cemented Omega’s reputation as a world-class manufacture.
This particular example, the Reference FX 6040, is a “survivor” in the best sense of the word. The stainless steel case is sharp and appears unpolished, with strong, defined lugs that give it a fantastic presence. But the dial is simply spectacular. What was once a stark “Arctic White” dial has, over 70 years, transformed into a warm, creamy tapestry with a heavy, even “stardust” patina. This is the kind of honest, beautiful aging that collectors prize.
