Breitling, founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, began with a focus on precision chronographs and timing instruments. Early on, Breitling established itself as a specialist in chronographs for scientific and industrial use, a reputation that only grew when the brand relocated to La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1892. By the early 20th century, Breitling had earned acclaim for its reliable timekeeping and eventually became a go-to choice for aviators, cementing its place as a leader in aviation watches.
In 1936, Breitling became the official supplier to the Royal Air Force, and in 1952, the brand introduced its most iconic model: the Navitimer. Featuring a slide rule bezel for complex flight calculations, the Navitimer became an indispensable tool for pilots, including members of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). This aviation focus expanded further in the 1960s when Breitling collaborated with astronauts to create the Cosmonaute, a 24-hour chronograph worn by Scott Carpenter on the Mercury-Atlas 7 mission, making it one of the first Swiss watches in space.
Today, Breitling remains synonymous with aviation-inspired design and precision engineering, with iconic collections like the Navitimer, Chronomat, and Superocean continuing to appeal to pilots and watch enthusiasts alike. Known for its robust, stylish chronographs and dedication to performance, Breitling has solidified its legacy as a brand that combines technical mastery with a distinctly adventurous spirit.
